Before You Say “I Do”
What to Ask Your Wedding Officiant Before You Book
Planning a wedding is one of the most exciting times in your life—but let’s be honest, it can also feel like a whirlwind of decisions.
One of the most important (and often overlooked) choices you’ll make is who will officiate your ceremony. Whether you're planning a grand celebration or a cozy elopement in Salt Lake City, asking the right questions can help you find the perfect fit.
But here’s the thing—your officiant isn’t just the person who says a few words and signs the paperwork. They’re the voice of your ceremony, the one who sets the tone, tells your story, and helps create one of the most memorable moments of your life. Whether you want something heartfelt, humorous, spiritual, or totally non-traditional, the right officiant will make your ceremony feel like you.
That’s why I’ve put together this Q&A-style blog to answer some of the most common questions couples have when choosing a wedding officiant—plus a few extra insights tailored for Utah weddings. I’m here to listen, collaborate, and help bring your dream ceremony to life—one that feels personal, meaningful, and true to you.
Are you legally authorized to perform weddings in Utah?
Yes—I’m fully authorized to perform weddings in Utah, and I’ve officiated over 25 ceremonies across the state. With that experience comes a deep understanding of the legal requirements and the common pitfalls couples can run into. From paperwork to timing to venue-specific quirks, I’ll help you avoid surprises and make sure everything is smooth, seamless, and legally sound.
How do you personalize the ceremony?
Every couple has a story worth telling, and my goal is to learn as much as I can about yours. I take the time to get to know you—your journey, your values, your vision—so I can craft a ceremony that feels true to who you are. Whether that includes personal stories, custom vows, symbolic rituals, or just the right touch of humor, the ceremony is never about me. It’s about celebrating your love and the life you’re beginning together.
Can we write our own vows?
Absolutely. Some couples love writing their own vows, while others prefer traditional wording—or a mix of both. With over 25 weddings under my belt, I’ve helped couples navigate all kinds of choices, including the sometimes overwhelming task of writing vows. I’m here to support you every step of the way, whether that means coaching you through your own words or providing a fully personalized wedding script that reflects your love, your values, and your vision for the day.
What’s your ceremony style?
My style is all about your style. I focus on flexibility and connection, which means I take the time to understand what matters most to you. Whether you’re envisioning something light and joyful, romantic and heartfelt, spiritual but not religious, or something entirely your own—we’ll work together to craft a ceremony that feels authentic, meaningful, and true to your story.
How many weddings have you officiated?
I’ve officiated over 25 weddings in all kinds of environments—and I’ve loved every one of them. From mountaintop vows to a biker gang ceremony in a public park, a religious service at the White Memorial Chapel on Capitol Hill, and even a warehouse wedding on an improvised stage, I’ve seen it all. No matter the setting or the surprises (hello, Utah weather!), I bring calm, care, and flexibility to make sure each ceremony feels just right.
Do you help with the marriage license process?
Absolutely. In Salt Lake City, you’ll need to get your license from the Salt Lake County Clerk. There’s no waiting period, and it’s valid for 30 days. I’ll walk you through the process and take care of filing everything after the ceremony. Check out this blog for more details: How to Get Married in Salt Lake City.
What’s included in your fee?
Transparency is key. My pricing is always upfront and all-inclusive—covering travel, custom scripts, rehearsals (if needed), and filing your paperwork. No hidden fees, no surprises. I’m also happy to work with each couple to find a package that fits their needs and budget. You can explore all the details on my Services page.
Can we meet or chat before booking?
Of course! I offer free consultations so we can connect, talk through your vision, and make sure we’re a great fit. Whether it’s over Zoom or a local coffee, I’d love to meet you and discuss how I can make your dream wedding come to life.
